I enter the corridor at the speed of light, following the predetermined ray path through the lenses of the telescope—a tiny particle among countless others. Suddenly, however, my journey across light-years comes to an end: I hit a photographic plate and release all my energy into a chemical reaction, and my existence is extinguished.
But something remains: an image of me and the others who traveled with me, an image of the star that emitted us millions of years ago and sent us on this long journey here into this telescope. An image that in turn reflects massless corpuscles like me, creating a miracle: you can see—distant star systems as well as the tip of your own nose! (Vast legions of particles are needed to make your view of the world possible. And as far as I’m concerned: I was more than happy to do it for you.)
