I enter the corridor. This is the last one that hasn’t been sterilized yet, according to the display on my hardsuit sleeve—soon these wretched Kxax will be history on my ship! I grip my zapper tighter, scanning the shadows in the corners of the hall. A sharp pain stabs into my left ankle. A Kxax stinger has punctured the hardsuit. I take aim. The searing blast doesn’t just shred the attacker, but takes half of my left leg along with it—yet the alien secretion is faster: The diabolical poison of the Kxax has already reached my heart. I knew the risk; I know they’ll hail me as a hero. It’s just a shame I won’t be around to reap the rewards.

I enter the hallway. It’s the one with the carpet. Well, that’s not going to stop me. With a quick yank, I flip the carpet aside, and there it is, just as I suspected, a few steps ahead: a deep pit with sharpened stakes jutting up from the bottom. Staying true to my principle of not taking anything personally, I shrug with a smile, get a running start to leap across, and continue my journey with a light heart.

I enter the corridor. The doors are glass: display windows into the cages of the nocturnal. They stare at me with large, round eyes. I stare back with large, round eyes. Will they recognize me as one of their own?

I enter the corridor as the last of 110 and sit down to write my life on paper scraps—and wait until the clock runs out.
